A redesign of RIAA's Gold® & Platinum® Program's visual system

This was an assignment from my Core 2 class. Students were required to research an existing organization, product, brand, etc., and design a flexible visual identity.

"RIAA’s historic Gold® & Platinum® Program defines success in the recorded music industry. Originally conceived to honor artists and track sound recording sales, Gold & Platinum Awards have come to stand as a benchmark of success for any artist—whether they’ve just released their first song or Greatest Hits album."

After researching various industries, I found that the visual presentation of RIAA is not nicely organized, especially the treatment of the medal stickers when applying to a CD cover. RIAA places medals in an inappropriate way that covers artists' faces or the title of CDs.

I utilized a 7x7 grid system and redesigned the shape of medals to fit different CD covers which no longer cover the titles or the artists. This new system provides basic information and fits the original design of CDs.

Solution: Placing the grid system and putting medals on the grid to create a coherent visual and at the same time protect the beauty of the CD covers.

Medal Stickers: I designed multiple shapes for the medal stickers to fit in different designs of CDs. Also, I utilized 1 gradient for each level to differentiate one from another.

Problem: The medal stickers were placed regardless of the original design of the CD.
